Mr. Md. Anwarul Islam Sarker was appointed as the Election Commissioner by His Excellency the President on 21 November 2024 and took oath on 24 November 2024 and assumed the duties of the Election Commissioner.
Mr. Md. Anwarul Islam Sarker was born on December 31, 1962, in a respectable Muslim family in Rupganj Upazila of Narayanganj District. His father was the late Nurul Islam and his mother was the late Saleha Khatun.
Mr. Md. Anwarul Islam Sarker obtained a Master's degree in Accounting from Dhaka University in 1985 and later began his career by passing the 7th BCS examination. He joined the Chattogram Divisional Commissioner's office as Assistant Commissioner on February 15, 1988. This officer of the 1985 batch of the Bangladesh Civil Service (Administration) cadre has accumulated experience working at various levels of field administration. In his long and colorful working life, he has played a prominent role at various levels as an employee of the republic. In this regard, his notable responsibilities include serving as Assistant Commissioner in Cox’s Bazar district, Upazila Magistrate in Bancharampur and Sadar upazilas of Brahmanbaria district, Revenue Deputy Collector (RDC) in Habiganj district, Upazila Nirbahi Officer in Barkal upazila of Rangamati district, 'Upazila Nirbahi Officer' of Bancharampur Upazila of Brahmanbaria District, 'Upazila Nirbahi Officer' of Kaliakair Upazila of Gazipur District, 'Additional Deputy Commissioner/Magistrate in Gazipur district and as Deputy Commissioner in Rajshahi district. In addition, he served as Assistant Director at the Bureau of Non-Formal Education under the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education, Director at the National Housing Authority under the Ministry of Housing and Public Works, Deputy Secretary and Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Joint Secretary and Additional Secretary at the Ministry of Public Administration and finally as Additional Secretary at the Ministry of Youth and Sports. Concluding his distinguished career, he retired from government service on December 30, 2021.
In his personal life, he is married and the father of three daughters. His wife Naima Akter is a housewife.
